Here to help with your planning

How to organise a funeral

Planning a funeral during a time of loss can feel overwhelming. At N.E. Downing, our role is to walk with you through each stage, patiently, respectfully, and without rushing. Below is a clear roadmap of what usually needs to happen. Use it as a guide, not a checklist you must follow alone, we’re here to help every step of the way.

Step 1

Conversation

When you first reach out to us, we begin by listening. Every family’s circumstances are different, and our priority is to understand your needs, your wishes, and your concerns.

We’ll explain the first steps clearly, answer any questions you may have, and provide reassurance. If you feel ready, we’ll arrange a time to meet, either at one of our branches or in the comfort of your own home, to talk through the arrangements in more detail.

Step 2

The care of your loved one

We will make arrangements to bring your loved one into our care as soon as possible, handling this with the dignity and respect it deserves.

Our private Chapels of Rest provide a calm and peaceful space where family and friends may spend time in quiet reflection, say goodbye in their own way, or simply be together. Every aspect of care, from transport to preparation, is carried out with the utmost professionalism and compassion.

Step 3

Paperwork and legal requirements

One of the first tasks is to register the death, which usually needs to be done within five days. A medical certificate confirming the cause of death will be required, and once registration is complete, you will receive the official death certificate, along with a certificate for burial or cremation.

Our team will guide you through this process step by step, helping to ensure nothing is overlooked and providing support with any forms or practicalities that may feel daunting.

Step 4

Choosing the funeral format and options

Together, we will discuss the kind of funeral you feel is right. This might be a burial, a cremation, or an unattended service, depending on personal wishes and circumstances.

We’ll also talk through the tone and style of the ceremony, whether religious, non-religious, humanist, or something more personal and unique. From here, we’ll guide you in choosing the location, coffin or casket, flowers, music, readings, and transport. Every detail, large or small, is carefully arranged to reflect your loved one’s life and values.

Step 5

Finalising arrangements

Once decisions have been made, we will confirm the plan in full, including the time, venue, and all the details that make the day meaningful. We will talk openly and clearly about costs, so you have peace of mind with no unexpected surprises.

Our team will coordinate everything on your behalf, liaising with ministers, celebrants, florists, crematoria, or cemeteries, and ensuring that everything is in place for the day.

Step 6

The day of the funeral

On the day itself, we are there to make sure everything runs smoothly and with dignity. From the moment we arrive, through the procession, service, and committal, every detail is handled with care.

We are there not only to guide the proceedings but also to support you and your family, giving reassurance and helping guests where needed. Our priority is to allow you to focus on remembrance, knowing that everything else is taken care of.

Step 7

After the funeral

Our support does not end with the service. We can help arrange memorials, headstones, or remembrance events, as well as assist with the paperwork and practicalities that follow.

If you need further guidance, we can connect you with bereavement support services or simply be there to listen when you need us. For us, caring for your family continues long after the day of the funeral.
